As always, this is quite exotic with notes of dried sage, dark cherries, mulberries, cedar and red licorice. Full body with round tannins, showing good grip and a medium-long finish. Drink or hold. Made from organically grown grapes.

2016 Capezzana, Barco Reale di Carmignano

The Capezzana estate, 24 kilometres north west of Florence, is owned by the Contini Bonacossi family. The younger generation is now firmly in charge of the estate's 80 hectares of vineyard, with daughter Benedetta Contini Bonacossi as winemaker and Francesco Bernabei as consultant winemaker. The wines and the olive oil have an elegance which marks this estate out from the crowd.

The grapes for this wine are grown on the estate's 104 hectares of vineyard which are situated at approximately 150-200 metres above sea level, facing south, south-east and south-west. Soils are schistous clay with limestone.

Barco Reale is a younger version of the Carmignano from Capezzana, as the fruit is sourced from slightly younger vines in the same vineyards. Fermentation lasted seven days in temperature controlled stainless steel vats followed by a seven day maceration. The wine was matured in 25 hectolitre Allier oak barrels for 12 months before bottling, followed by three months in bottle before release.

The 2016 vintage saw a very mild winter. Rainfall until the beginning of June allowed for important underground water reserves. Perfect temperatures prompted the growth of plentiful and healthy fruit which flourished in the following dry, sunny and hot days which alternated with cool nights. Heavy rainfall finally arrived on 15th September – 80ml of rain over three days. The large diurnal temperature variation has given the 2016 vintage an aromatic note more defined than in previous years.
