Chateau Musar

The Legend Lives On

As ever, the flagship Musar red is released only after it has aged in the chateau's cellars for a minimum of 6 years. This patient approach has once again paid dividends and the wine is both vibrant and cerebral.

Given the large and loyal following we have for Musar and the increasing increasing world-wide competition to secure enough allocation to satisfy demand, I recommend getting your order in early. There are now very few opportunities to buy back vintages from the chateau, as stocks of older wines are sadly depleted. Going forwards, it will be advisable to buy on first release and cellar to your preferred level of maturity.

Jancis Robinson MW recently conducted a vertical tasting of Red and White Ch. Musar, encompassing vintages from 1961 to 2011. Subscribers can read the article and notes here.

The charismatic Serge Hochar may no longer be with us but his life's work lives on in the ibrary of back vintages still available from the Chateau's cellars. The reds are immensely age-worthy but it was always the whites which Serge was proudest of:

“My whites are my first reds, they are to be served at room temperature, they will go with more foods than any of my reds, they are more serious than my reds and their dimensions are way bigger than any of my reds”.

-Serge Hochar 1939-2014.
