In the 1700's, the vineyards of Tokaj were the first in the world to be classified. For many years they were the wines of choice at the finest courts of Europe but during the communist era, standards dropped and the region's reputation was all but lost. In 1990, noted author and wine historian, Hugh Johnson co-founded The Royal Tokaji Company, with the goal of revitalising this historic wine region. Since then, the company has achieved world-wide recognition and Tokaj has gained a new lease of life.

2013 is only the 4th vintage of the 21st Century to produce all three of the 1st Growth Single Vineyard wines: Nyulászó, Betsek and Szt. Tamás. Not a single bottle was made between 2008 and 2013.There are just 10,926 bottles of Single Vineyard Aszú from the 2013 vintage.
