From a cooler block on the estate with steep slopes and thin soils. Fermented in cement tanks and aged 12–18 months on lees in French oak barrels and casks. TA 5.2 g/l, pH 3.71, RS 3.5 g/l. Very dark purplish crimson with purple rim. A hint of smoky/charry reduction at first, savoury and spicy dark fruit. Smells more rocky and dark as it opens, with a touch of elderberry wildness. Firm, compact tannins are super-fine and dominate the impression in the mouth at the moment but there's all that cool dark fruit to balance for the long term. Elegant, tannic finesse even now but this will repay patience. The oak is extremely subtle. Shame about the heavy bottle, which seems so unnecessary with such a classy wine. (
