The 2019 Chianti Classico Berardenga is a classic wine for the year. Bright, perfumed and light on its feet, the 2019 Chianti Classico Berardenga is so wonderfully expressive. There is a feeling of vibrancy to the 2019 that is hugely appealing. A wine of energy more than power. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon linger in a gorgeous Chianti Classico that is more about transparency than power.

This 470-hectare estate is located northeast of Siena in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the southern border of the Chianti Classico zone. Fèlsina epitomises the powerful style of southern Chianti, where the wines are stylistically more akin to those from Montalcino than their fellow Chianti from Fontodi or Isole e Olena. Domenico Poggiali bought the estate in 1966. Giuseppe Mazzocolin, son-in-law of Domenico, entered the family business in the late 1970s and played a significant role in the growth of the winery. In 1990 Giovanni Poggiali, Domenico's grandson, joined the management and continues his grandfather's enterprise with the same passion. Giuseppe Mazzocolin is now less involved in the running of the estate, and consultant oenologist Franco Bernabei is very much at the helm of the winemaking team.

The Fèlsina vineyards are on average more than 50 years old, located at an altitude of 350-420 metres above sea level, with a good south-western exposure. There are 5,400 vines planted per hectare. Soils are a blue-grey Quartzite sandstone mix, with layers of sand, Alberese (shale, schist and limestone) and alluvial pebbles. Vines are trained according to a simple Guyot system, with a maximum of five to eight buds per vine. Biodynamic practices are followed in the vineyard, although without official certification.

Fermentation took place at 28-30°C with daily punching down of the cap, followed by a 12 to 15 day maceration. Between late March and early April, the wine was transferred to small and medium-sized Slavonian oak casks where it was aged for 12 months. The final blend was then assembled and bottled and was aged for three months in the Fèlsina cellars before release.

The 2019 vintage in Chianti began with cold and dry conditions, followed by a mild February. Spring saw good levels of rainfall that helped to maintain water storage levels ready for the warmer months. June was warmer than average and, despite some hailstorms in July and August, conditions remained stable well into the harvest period, resulting in good quality yields that were higher than in 2018.
